Ingredients to Avoid in Your Skincare Products

When it comes to skincare products, it is easy to walk down the aisles at your local grocery or retail store and pick up any skincare product you may need. Whether it is lotion, face wash, soap, makeup, or whatever else, not all of the products you can find at your neighborhood store are great for you. While they may claim to reduce wrinkles, they may contain ingredients that can cause more harm than good.

There are many harmful ingredients that are found in skincare products that can lead to irritation, allergic reactions, and other issues. While these ingredients are all too common in some products, there are ways to avoid them. Shopping for natural skincare products is a great starting point.

At Sweet Grass Farm, we offer natural bath and body products that can help you avoid those harmful ingredients and keep your skin safe and healthy. We offer natural lip balm, muscle rub, lotion, bar soap, liquid soap, skin cream, bath soak, and more in our bath and body collection. We also can provide you with natural home products that help remove harmful ingredients from other areas of your life.

While there are natural product alternatives to just about every skincare product out there, you may have a few products that you simply love. If this is the case, there are some ingredients that you should check for before you continue to use them. In this blog, we are going to talk about some of the harmful ingredients that you should avoid in your beauty products.

Parabens

You may have heard of parabens before. These are used as preservatives to prevent the growth of mold, bacteria, and yeast in cosmetic products. While this seems like it would be a good thing, parabens have some negative properties which make them worth avoiding. Parabens contain estrogen-mimicking properties, which can lead to many health issues. They have been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer, reproductive issues, and fertility problems.

Parabens are made up of an entire family of chemicals, which include methylparabens, butylparabens, ethylparabens, and propylparabens. Even though parabens have been linked to breast cancer, skin cancer, and fertility issues, the FDA has not ruled them as a harmful ingredient. Products that are labeled as paraben-free are always a great choice!

Phthalates

Phthalates is another ingredient that you want to avoid when shopping for skincare products. Phthalates are a group of chemicals that are used in products to increase the flexibility and softness of plastics. These chemicals help products stick to our skin. These chemicals are endocrine disruptors which have also been linked to breast cancer, early breast development in girls, and reproductive birth defects in both females and males.

While phthalates can be harmful, they are not always listed in the list of ingredients because it is usually added to the fragrances, and are often listed as a “secret formula.”

Fragrances

While you may think of fragrances as natural scents from essential oils and other natural products, that is not necessarily what “fragrances” means when it is listed on the back of your skincare products packages. The term fragrances was created to protect a company’s “secret formula.” Since these ingredients are considered a secret, companies do not have to disclose what ingredients are actually in these formulas.

These ingredients are generally full of different chemicals that can be harmful in many different ways. Because these chemicals are unknown, fragrances are among the most harmful ingredient in skincare products. These chemical concoctions have been associated with allergies, dermatitis, hormone disruption, reproductive issues, and more. Whenever possible, purchase “fragrance-free” products or choose products that are scented with natural ingredients like essential oils, which is how Sweet Grass Farm adds fragrance to our products.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate

Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) are detergents that are added to products to make them bubble, foam, and lather. These detergents are added to about 90 percent of personal care and cleaning products. Just think about how many of the products you use on a daily basis that foam and bubble. SLS and SLES are known to cause irritations to the skin, lungs, and eyes. These detergents can lead to skin irritation, canker sores, and acne around the mouth and chin.

While that may be enough to make you want to avoid these detergents, those issues aren’t even the main cause for concern. SLS has the potential to interact and combine with other chemicals, which can lead to the formation of nitrosamines, a carcinogen. These combinations can lead to kidney and respiratory damage.

Triclosan

This is a commonly used antimicrobial chemical that is a known endocrine disruptor. Even the FDA has agreed that triclosan does not provide humans with any health benefits and requires that manufacturers that use it must demonstrate that there are no long-term detrimental effects. Triclosan has been linked to skin irritation, thyroid problems, reproductive hormone issues, impaired immune function, increased allergies, bacteria becoming resistant to antibiotics, and more.

Retinol

Retinol is also known as vitamin A. You may be surprised to find retinol on our list of ingredients to avoid, but this vitamin has some negative side effects. Retinol is often used as an anti-aging agent in products, but the negative side effects definitely outweigh the benefits. Retinol becomes carcinogenic in sunlight, which is why many of these products are meant to be used at night. This ingredient has also been linked to developmental and reproductive toxicity, DNA damage, and faster growth of skin tumors when used on the skin.

There are many products that you should avoid in your skincare products. These are only a few of the most common and most surprising. The best way to avoid these harmful ingredients is to buy natural skincare products that only use, well, natural ingredients.
